When you walk into Pronio’s Market in Hershey, PA, you’re stepping into a living piece of history....
Every City Has a Soul
Is a city alive? I believe so. Just as every person is a blend of body and spirit, a city draws life from the individuals who live, work, and dream within it. Together, they form the soul of a place—a unique essence that distinguishes it from anywhere else.
In the mid-20th century, every city was truly distinct, offering a tapestry of local shops and restaurants that reflected the individuality of its people. But today, the uniformity of chain stores often overshadows those hidden gems. While national brands like McDonald’s or Chick-fil-A have their place, they tell the stories of San Bernadino, CA and Hapeville, GA. They don’t tell your city’s story. They don’t reveal its soul.
While every city has buildings, roads, and businesses, it is the stories, memories, and connections woven through its communities that make it truly alive.
Hershey’s Soul: A Story of Legacy and Passion
I live in Dauphin County, Hershey, PA. It is world-famous for its chocolate, and its founder, Milton S. Hershey. Its soul is steeped in entrepreneur spirit and love for home and country. Milton S. Hershey built a thriving community around his chocolate factory
and ultimately gave his money to the school for underprivileged youth that he and wife, Katherine, created.
With the Hersheys as a backdrop, our town has continued to develop. Each small business, from family-run eateries to unique boutiques, tells a story of passion and perseverance. Take Knock Knock Boutique, a local shop with roots spanning generations. Owner Emily Drobnock comes from a family steeped in the retail business, where her father, Dave, and even his parents before him, made their mark on Hershey’s business community, being shopkeepers themselves. These generational ties are more than history—they’re the lifeblood of what makes Hershey special.
A Soul Worth Remembering
At Yokl, we believe in rekindling the connection between communities and their local treasures. Whether through our gamified app or immersive events like the Savor the Season food tours, our mission is simple: help people rediscover the charm, talent, and flavors that make their towns extraordinary.
It’s about experiencing the stories behind the businesses. It’s walking into The Savory Café for a holiday-inspired brunch or tasting handmade candies from Groves Homemade Candies while hearing how the owners began their journey. Every meal, every purchase, every interaction is a thread that connects you to the community's greater narrative.
