Savory Café in Hershey, PA serves fresh, scratch-made café fare and quality coffee in a warm, community-focused setting loved by locals.
We’re a full service eatery and full service catering business, including wedding and corporate events.
I have a huge passion for food, especially fresh food. I grew up gardening with my grandmother. I like to grow my own herbs. I love to garden. I wanted to open a place that offers more organic options, more gluten free, organic, non-processed foods.
Face or faced?? LOL. There’s always something. The buildout here was really tough. Instead of the 6 months we thought, it took 18 months to build out this space, with codes and permits and every type of obstacle. But we had to stick with it and decide we wouldn’t give up. It did not come easy! Also, COVID was difficult, but God blessed us. We did takeout and family dinners which kept us afloat for the whole year and we were still profitable.
Leaving a corporate job of 18 years to start something brand new was probably the biggest leap of faith, but I was passionate about it. I had the business background, so I knew that side of it. That was a good start, but it’s been a lot harder than I envisioned.
My family drives me. We have five kids, and I want them to see that if you dream it and believe it, you can do it. My daughter's my GM here and she’s amazing but I think all five of our kids are really proud of what we’re doing here. My husband owns his own business, too, and I think both of us just want our kids to know they can do this, they just have to work hard. But yes, my family drives me and I want to do well and create something for them.
I love wedding catering. And I love talking to the guests that come in, especially the locals. I love being in Hershey, and I feel very fortunate and blessed to have a space in Hershey. I felt like we needed another non-chain store coffee option, too. The beans are roasted weekly, and we grind coffee in here every day.
Know your strengths, know your weaknesses, and where you’re weak, find someone to fill those gaps! You can’t do everything. I’m fortunate that my husband is an accountant, so he takes care of my accounting and payroll. Another thing, take care of your team! I love my team; they are like family. Maybe I overpay, but they show up and we all get along. Our policy is Family First, because that's why we're all here, right? My boss at State Farm was amazing to me and was so accommodating. And I learned from her that if you have a win, your team has a win, you share the wins.
We love helping single moms and youth. They are our primary focus right now in our charitable giving. My mom was a single mom, and she was the best, like she instilled so many values and work ethic and you know, like, I really believe, if you help the mom, you help the children.
We grew up with the Amish and spent our summers working on Amish forms. We didn't own a TV and didn’t listen to the radio.
