Don’t Wait for Perfect Weather

I grew up in northern California, where the concept of “weather” was different—mostly because no one in my circle really talked about it. My mom, who was also from northern California, didn’t consider weather a factor worth discussing. It wasn’t good or bad. It just was.

I didn’t even realize people had opinions about weather until I was a teenager.

Back in Eureka, a beach outing wasn’t something we saved for a perfectly sunny day. We threw on jackets and hoodies and just went. Sometimes we roasted hotdogs over a fire in the sand in t-shirts and shorts. But most times we layered up and got whipped by salty wind—but we still went. Rainy day? That didn’t mean staying inside. It meant to dressing differently.

Years later, a friend who had moved to Eureka told me, “I get it now—you guys don’t wait for a nice day to do something outside. You just do it.” She was right, but I didn’t realize that wasn’t the “norm.”

The weather didn’t decide what kind of day we were going to have. We did.

I once read a line in an article that stuck with me:

“You can exercise outside any day of the year—you just need the right equipment for the day.”

It’s true! I’ve seen video of guys bike riding in Finland in the winter; they just have super big, nobby tires to cut through and grip the snow! And honestly, the concept doesn’t just apply to exercise or going to the beach. It applies to life. To work. To business.

We don’t wait for perfect conditions, for a “good day” to start showing up. The forecast doesn’t get to decide your forward motion. We do.

Just grab the right gear. Layer up. Be ready.
