What does your business do?

I elevate local businesses. I offer marketing services, including social media promotion and event planning, to help businesses connect with their audiences in authentic and engaging ways.

Why did you start your business?

I started my business a little bit by accident. I grew up here and have always felt passionately about this area, and I got tired of hearing people say there was nothing to do around here. I started writing a nightlife column, Out with Sara, for The Patriot-News when I was 23, and through that, I had the opportunity to explore the region in ways I hadn’t growing up.

That experience made me appreciate Pennsylvania agriculture, the amazing products that come from here, and the creative people building businesses. I started sharing local events through my blog, and over time, businesses began reaching out for help with promotions and giveaways. That led to hosting events, which quickly became a big part of what I do. By 2012, I was able to leave my full-time job and run my business independently.

What are some key moments in your journey?

Leaving my full-time job to go out on my own was a major turning point. That was when I committed to taking this seriously, figuring out how to turn what I loved into a business. I told myself I would say yes to every opportunity, and honestly, I never looked back.

COVID was another defining moment. Almost overnight, I lost 90% of my business. I had so many events planned, and suddenly, everything was canceled. But I’ve always been able to pivot when needed, so I focused on what I could do—promoting businesses online, helping them reach people through social media, and keeping my audience engaged. I wrote guides on where to order takeout, how businesses were adapting, and ways to support local. That period really reinforced how important adaptability is.

What drives you?

I care a lot—probably too much sometimes. But I really believe in this community and in the people who pour their hearts into their businesses. I love telling their stories and helping them succeed.

I also think people should learn to love where they live. It’s easy to complain or take things for granted, but if you’re not trying to make things better, then what’s the point? There’s so much to appreciate here, and I want to help people see that.

Can you share a major obstacle you faced and how you overcame it?

Other than COVID, one of my biggest challenges was defining what I do. When I started, social media influencers weren’t really a thing, and blogging wasn’t taken seriously as a business. I wasn’t quite PR, I wasn’t quite journalism, and I wasn’t quite marketing—I was a mix of all of it.

It took time to figure out how to describe my business in a way that made sense. At one point, I even considered rebranding with a new name, but after working with a marketing firm, they told me I was my brand, and changing that would be a mistake. That helped me clarify my focus: I specialize in promotion, events, and social media consulting. Once I embraced that, everything became much clearer.

What advice would you give others looking to start business?

The key to success is consistency and showing up. Lots of people have ideas, but not everyone follows through. If you’re serious about something, start talking to people, make a plan, and then just do it. You can’t wait for everything to be perfect.

Are there any community projects you are passionate about?

I’ve been involved in a lot of nonprofit work over the years. I co-founded Harrisburg Beer Week, which raised over $100,000 for Harrisburg River Rescue & Emergency Services. I’ve worked on fundraisers for friends, served on the board of PA Eats, and I’m currently the Operations Manager for PA Friends of Jazz.

Right now, my biggest focus is the Greater Harrisburg Walk to End Alzheimer’s—I’m the Executive Leadership Chair for 2025. I’m also involved with the Harrisburg Regional Chamber, which helps support and grow local businesses.

Is there something interesting about you we might not guess?

I love gardening and houseplants—I have quite the collection. I also love to cook. If I have a free afternoon, I’d probably spend it reading. I try to make time for my book club every month; it’s one of the few things I do that’s not work-related.

And of course, there’s my son. He’s seven, and he keeps life interesting!
