I like to say I’m Mike’s “retirement plan.” My journey with Mike Leonard Plumbing started in 2010, but it was never something I initially aspired to do. I always thought I’d renovate homes and expand a rental portfolio.
My wife grew up near Mike and Diane Leonard and babysat their kids, and when we got married, the Leonards supported us during a mission trip. After returning, I wanted to work with my hands and started asking around about construction jobs. Mike suggested, “Why don’t you try plumbing?” and the rest is history.
I learned everything on the job, combining hands-on plumbing with my business degree. While I once thought I’d pursue non-profit work, I found this role to be incredibly fulfilling. Mike, who has been plumbing since 1978 and started the business in 1992, was ready to step back and focus on other projects.
To me, keeping this business local was crucial. Selling to private equity—which is becoming a big trend—would have taken jobs and relationships out of our community. My “why” is all about preserving what Mike built and serving the community in the way he always envisioned.
Transitioning into this leadership role required stepping out of my comfort zone, but working with a business coach for two years gave me the tools to succeed. Now, I lead people instead of working with pipes, and solving people-centric problems is even more rewarding.
Transitioning into leadership was both a challenge and an opportunity. My goal is to create a workplace that I would want to work for—one that’s supportive, growth-oriented, and people-focused. It’s a continual process, but it’s also one of the most rewarding aspects of my role.
Nobody bats 1,000. Mistakes are inevitable, but what matters is how you respond. Own up to them, learn from them, and move forward. Be flexible, show grace, and remember the values that guide you.
For me, the lessons I learned from mission work—service, humility, and perseverance—continue to shape how I approach business.
“Every accomplishment begins with the decision to try.”
We love supporting local food banks in Grantville, Hummelstown, Palmyra, Hershey, and Harrisburg. Beyond that, we encourage our team to use company trucks and supplies to help their families, churches, and communities whenever needed. Helping others is at the heart of what we do.
I’m driven by curiosity and a passion for learning. For me, it’s not just about fixing something but understanding why it broke in the first place. As a repair plumber, my goal is to diagnose the root cause and prevent the problem from recurring. That curiosity keeps me engaged and makes every day fulfilling.
At Mike Leonard Plumbing, we prioritize service over sales. Our weekly meetings center on learning and improving, fostering a culture where we help each other grow. Many of our original employees are still with us, which speaks volumes about the relationships we build here.
We’re deeply committed to lifelong customer connections, with 95% of our work taking place within 10 miles of our shop. When customers call, our goal is to make their day better, and it’s incredibly satisfying to solve their problems and give back to the community.
We do “show and tell” at our weekly meetings! Everyone brings something they’ve encountered in the field—a problem they solved or a unique challenge they faced—and we discuss it as a team. It’s a fun and practical way to learn and grow together.
