The story of Hummelstown Fuel Oil began with my father, a hardworking railroad electrician. In the mid-1950s, he purchased a small oil business, which he rebranded as Hummelstown Fuel Oil. He balanced this new venture alongside his railroad job for 10 years, which I think shows a relentless work ethic. I joined the business at 13, learning the ropes through hands-on experience. Dad came home from work one summer afternoon and said, “What do you do all day? You’re coming with me tomorrow.” And I’ve been working here ever since, except for 4 years in the Navy. I’m 78 now. Today, the company remains a family tradition; I’m passing it on to the next generation.

In 1956, my father launched the business

I took over the business in 2012 after my father’s passing. He was 85.

The company has never laid off an employee, thanks to cross-training and adaptability.

Relationships I’ve built with customers and the satisfaction of helping families stay warm through every winter. I’m also driven by a commitment to my team, striving to create a workplace where everyone feels valued and supported. I think if the business provides me with a decent life, it should do the same for those who work alongside me. We get together once a year for a nice bash with our husbands and wives and it’s a nice time.

"Hard work is the foundation of success.” That’s my father’s timeless advice. He emphasized the importance of persistence, adaptability, and maintaining integrity in all business dealings. While the road may not always be easy, I think dedication and a focus on quality service will always yield long-term success.

We actively support the Hummelstown Food Bank and Cocoa Packs in Hershey, as well as the local high school and business associations. We believe in giving back to the area that has supported this family’s business for decades.

I’m a fly fisherman. I tie my own flies and enjoy both surf and stream fishing. Also, during my time in the Navy, we were part of a once-in-a-lifetime mission assisting the Gemini space program.
