Cocoa Packs is a nonprofit organization fighting food insecurity and poverty by providing meals and support to local students outside school hours.
Speciality: weekend food packs
We support food-insecure children by ensuring they have access to meals outside of school hours.
I noticed a shift in the demographic of our school district—more families qualifying for free and reduced lunches at an alarming rate. There wasn’t a system in place to address the needs of these food-insecure children over weekends. In 2015, we collaborated with the school district, including the superintendent and food service director, to develop a plan. We started in May, and by Thanksgiving, we had our first packs ready to distribute.
The generosity of those who believed in CocoaPacks from the start stands out. With no proof of concept, 10 individuals stepped up to help us meet a matching grant from the Central PA Food Bank. Their belief turned "nothing" into something tangible. We started by sending out 689 letters and were thrilled to enroll 93 children in our first program.
Another pivotal moment came during a tough time with the board. I felt a quiet reminder: “You never made it mine.” I realized I hadn’t fully entrusted this work to God. When I did, everything shifted. Claiming each space we worked in as His brought clarity, peace, and direction.
Jesus, His children, and the transformative power of selfless love. Love won on the cross, and love wins in our organization every single day.
Our early growth was supported by an incredible middle school administrator who gave us a classroom, and when we outgrew it, the weight room—complete with a loading dock perfect for Central PA Food Bank deliveries.
The biggest challenge came in March 2020. With two hours’ notice, we learned schools would close indefinitely. In the middle of the night, volunteers with pickup trucks helped us salvage what we could. Spring Creek Church opened their doors, enabling us to pivot to a drive-through model, which we’ve operated ever since.
Help create the world you want to live in.
Love always wins.
I earned a varsity letter—in choir! While others were recognized for sports, I proudly sang my way to mine. I still sing every day—in the car, at church, during distributions, and even in my office.
