Picnic Season is Here--And Today's the Perfect Day to Celebrate It

Did you know today is National Picnic Day? It’s one of those sweet little holidays that might sneak past your calendar, but I think it’s one worth celebrating—especially when the sun is shining and spring is putting on a show.

There’s something simple and lovely about a picnic. Maybe it’s the fresh air, or the way food tastes just a little better when you’re sitting outside. Or maybe it’s just the excuse to slow down, grab a bite, and soak in the season—something we all could use a little more of.

Luckily, our town makes it easy to turn an ordinary lunch into a picnic-worthy experience. We’re surrounded by so many beautiful outdoor spaces, and Shank Park is one of our favorites. Whether you’re laying out a blanket under the trees or grabbing a seat at a picnic table near the playground, it’s a great spot to enjoy a little break with the family—or even by yourself (no shame in a solo picnic with a good book and a sandwich!).

And if you’re not quite up for packing a basket, don’t worry—picnics don’t have to be homemade to be meaningful. We have a bunch of local restaurants with lovely outdoor dining spaces, and many offer takeout perfect for a park picnic. Support local AND skip the dishes? Yes, please.

Here are a few easy ways to celebrate today:

  • Pick up lunch from a local café or diner and take it to the park.

  • Plan an after-school snack picnic with the kids—juice boxes and goldfish totally count.

  • Grab a blanket, your favorite takeout, and head out for a casual date night under the stars.

  • Text a friend and meet halfway for a catch-up on a park bench.

No matter how you do it, take the opportunity to step outside, connect with nature, and enjoy the community we’re lucky to call home. Days like this are a gentle reminder to slow down, breathe in that fresh spring air, and appreciate the little things—like sun-warmed shoulders, good food, and time spent together.

So here’s your sign: Go outside. Eat something tasty. Celebrate the season and support local while you’re at it. Happy National Picnic Day!
