Warm weather will bring more than just flowers to East Hanover Township…

During the East Hanover Township Board of Supervisors’ Feb. 4 meeting, the board approved surveying work to begin for the Earlys Mill Road realignment project.

Earlys Mill Road connects Sand Beach and Laudermilch roads and features a “tough S-curve” that often poses safety issues for the large agricultural vehicles and equipment that frequent the road.

“That road is on the list of roads to be repaved this year and has been a long time coming,” township manager Nicholas Yingst said.

As part of the paving project for Earlys Mill, the township saw an opportunity to improve that problematic S-curve.

“The S-curve is tight enough that it can lead to portions of large trucks actually crossing over the middle of the road,” Yingst said.

The realignment itself will involve cutting into the bank on the south side of the road, east of where Pheasant Road joins Earlys Mill, to eliminate some of the harsh curve.

“We’ve had conversations with the two property owners who are adjacent to that portion of roadway, and they’ve been very cooperative with us as we plan to move forward with it,” Yingst said. “It’s one of those improvements that has been a long time coming, and now with the road being paved, the time is right to attack it.”

Public works director Bryan Ziegler stated that there were three proposals from local engineering firms for “surveying and related work” on Earlys Mill Road.

The board authorized Act One & Associates to perform the surveying for the realignment project in an amount not to exceed $3,000.

Yingst added that paving is typically completed during late spring and early summer, and cutting back and flattening out the roadway would be done prior to paving. He estimated that the paving work would last a few days, but the time required for realignment is to be determined.
